One drug saved the world. Now, the same drug threatens to destroy it.
Ian Keys's rocket career took him to the top of pharma giant Hemisphere - creator of Necrophage, the drug that paused the outbreak and allowed the infected to live among us as normal. Ian's new position gives him access to secrets. To information the company doesn't want others to know. And now, an anonymous insider has begun feeding him ominous hints. Ian can't say what's wrong at Hemisphere, exactly - only that something is. And that the "cure" the company gave the world might not have been a cure at all. Now men are watching Ian's house. They're following his wife wherever she goes. When he's called to CEO Archibald Burgess's office, he's taken by armed guards - then plied with vague threats. What would happen if Necrophage failed? Burgess asks. What would become of our society if the disease were allowed to progress again ...and all of our well-behaved patients slowly turned feral? There's only one person Ian can take his case to reporter Alice Frank, who's been trying to blow the whistle on Hemisphere for years. But is there enough time to save what's left of the world...or has the inevitable slide back into chaos already begun?
In this gripping biological technothriller, best-selling authors Johnny B. Truant and Sean Platt blend real-world genetic engineering and high-stakes corporate espionage to deliver a heart-pumping race against the clock to save humanity.
Includes a special bonus note read by one of the authors.

When I first saw the concept, I thought I knew what I was in for - a typical Walking Dead sort of zombie book. In typical Platt/Truant style, they completely turned my expectations around. It's smart and thoughtful, with a lot of twists and turns. This takes place after the zombie epidemic is (mostly) under control and life has started to return to some semblance of normal in the world. But... well I can't say more without giving out some awesome spoilers, but I'll leave you to discover them on your own. While not G rated, it's also not horror in the sense of the Walking Dead books. This is really one of the guy's best series so far and I can't wait to see where it goes!

Dead City Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Scott Brick Sean Platt Johnny B Truant Podium Publishing Books Reviews
I loved everything about this book. Great concept (I’m a pharmacist so I geek out when my sci-fi crosses over into RX land). I love the way it ended...but I want more! I’m definitely a fan of this series and can’t wait for the next book.
A very good story different than other type stories of this kind. Once I started reading the story it was hard to put down. It had some great twist and turns.
I'm a big fan of the Realm and Sands authors, and was excited to see this book return to their production pipeline. There is something about zombie stories and post-apoc settings that sparks my imagination *when they are well done. Dead City has just climbed to the top of my Zambie favorites for telling an original (I know. Hard to believe-but true!) Zombie story. Further, we get to see the origins of the outbreak in an expertly conceived, thoroughly believable premise.
To Johnny and Sean thanks for rescuing this story from Johnny's slush pile. I'm eagerly awaiting Dead Nation and Dead World.
To the folks at Podium Excellent work, as always! You are the gold standard of audio book production.
The story takes a bit to reveal the true danger happening; the beginning has to lay some groundwork, introduce characters, etc. But, once it takes off -- hold on! I really enjoyed the twist on the zombie story -- the zombies are really take a backseat to the real technology going on. So, if you are not really the biggest zombie fan, you can still read this.
If you *are* a zombie fan, this has a nice twist on the genre, where a company has created a cure for zombies - if you administer a dose quickly enough (a few days? weeks?), then the damage is stopped. The infected person never gets "cured," but they don't keep deteriorating. The cure is a great premise, but as I said above, the real star of the story is ... well, that's a spoiler! You'll have to read it for yourself.
Buy this. You'll enjoy it, and be left wanting a sequel. Oh wait, they've already announced it's the first of a trilogy. Yay!
Somewhere along the line I agreed to do a review on this book. The only reason I got to the end was because I paid way too much for the audio. I listen to books while I walk. As I was walking I kept skipping several pages, on my Iphone, and it didn't detract from the story one bit. The character development left a lot to be desired. I got confused about who was who. There was entirely too much introspective self talk going on. There were thousands of words for filler to make it a full length book. The premise of the story was good and a much shorter version would have been good in an anthology set. I have been reading books for many years and only found two that I thought I shouldn't have purchased. This was one of them.
I've been a fan of Platt and Truant since they hooked me on 2 free books from their Invasion series from a Facebook ad of all things. I've read a variety of their stuff since then, and I've NEVER been disappointed. So when they started advertising Dead City as an audio serial through a new podcast, I jumped right in, listening to a few chapters every few days. As soon as it became available on , I was eager to finish it.
Wow. Can't say I've ever read anything like this before, but Platt and Truant didn't disappoint! While I found the characters' reactions to be quite plausible, given the scenario, I still had no idea which way it was going to turn. (Really, that's true of ALL of their books that I've read.) In a world with derivative works at every turn, this duo has a way of keeping their inquisitive fiction fresh and interesting.
I usually like to zero in on the character I was most impressed with personally, but I don't know how to choose just one!
I love Realm and Sands. Sean and Johnny are literary rockstars who write thoughtful, character driven stories that always make me think. And I LOVE that! They've never let me down as authors and Dead City was no exception.
As per usual I started Dead City without reading the “back cover” and had no idea what I was in store for, other than the awesome cover. Story geniuses take me away! But wow, I honestly wasn’t expecting Dead City to be a kick-ass thriller that tosses most of the Zombie tropes on their collective heads, and then stomps on them mercilessly.
Not to mention the fact that this was actually a technothriller with bits of corporate espionage and some really cool genetic engineering stuff that I didn’t understand at all, but still made sense for the story. If that makes sense?
I don’t want to say too much and ruin it for everybody, but Dead City is a super fun read with one of the most bad-ass endings in novel history. The set-up for book two is beyond tantalizing. And don’t get me started on how this needs a prequel, like, yesterday. Just sayin’….
Anyway, grab your helmet, and one of those riot shields (for the gore), and dive right in. I’ll see you at the end of the ride.
